THE TAKE

OpenPencil is an open-source design editor that opens Figma .fig files natively and saves them back with round-trip fidelity. Copy and paste between Figma and OpenPencil, and keep working on the files you already have.

A built-in AI assistant with 100+ tools creates shapes, sets styles, manages auto layout and analyzes design tokens, using your own API key. A headless CLI and an MCP server let scripts and AI agents inspect, edit and export designs. It’s also a toolkit: build your own editors on the Vue SDK, or embed OpenPencil in other products.

It’s free and local, with no account, no server and no internet required. Run it as a small desktop app on macOS, Windows and Linux, or right in the browser. Real-time collaboration is peer to peer, so you can share a link and edit together with live cursors.
